Fantasy / SF

PostSat Oct 01, 2016 11:26 am#8239

The other topics here are in the Fantasy / SF arena, but I thought I'd make a general thread on the subject.

Some of my favorites
Anne McCaffrey books;
especially - The Crystal Singer, The Ship Who Sang, and most especially The Dragonriders of Pern series ( most especially the original trilogy )
Mercedes Lackey books;
The Valdemar series - especially The Queens Own trilogy
Andre Norton books;
can't think of titles just now but she wrote good old fashioned SF
Frank Herbert - Dune a must read
Niven & Pournelle - The Mote in Gods Eye
Heinlein - Starship Troopers
L Ron Hubbard - Battlefield Earth
I hope I don't even have to mention JRR Tolkien

I could fill the page with books but I'll leave space in case others want to chime in

btw
You may recognize some of these titles from movies
but trust me, not only are the books better, but in some cases the story in the movies are practically unrecognizable from the book.

It occurs to me that it's been a while since I read them. May have to remedy that.

Just read Ubik by Philip K. Dick - I love him, but he always makes me feel like one of us doesn't know what he's doing. It just occurred to me that there's a little bit of our Kang vs. Ulysses SO plot, although PKD takes it, as always, in an unexpected direction.

Before that, reread The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin, for the umpteenth time - it's amazing how there's always more stuff there as I get older.

Next up, original REH Conan.
